At a town hall meeting style debate a citizen asked both Barack Obama and John McCain how sustainable energy practices would fit into their new administrations. Both candidates responded that the United States needed to be freed from its dependence upon foreign oil, but Barack Obama was much more specific, saying that he wanted to be free of dependence upon Middle East oil in the next 10 years. Critics of John McCain cite his insistence upon offshore drilling as nearsighted and part of the Republican tradition of courting oil lobbyists.
