Carbon footprints

Carbon footprints measure the impact your activities have on the environment. They primarily measure the amount of greenhouse gases measured in units of carbon dioxide that your daily lifestyle produces. Often businesses or communities add up individuals’ carbon footprints to measure the impact of their organization upon the environment.

Whole Foods, a provider of organic and environmentally friendly groceries and products, measures the carbon footprints of their stores. The retail store in Hadley, Massachusetts has the lowest carbon footprint and is used as a model for other stores. Businesses examine their carbon footprints in order to save money and protect the environment.

For Whole Foods, there is an additional benefit besides cost savings and having the satisfaction of knowing they are protecting the environment. Because Whole Foods caters to customers that pursue a green lifestyle, Whole Foods can market their retail stores’ low carbon footprints as part of their commitment to environmental stewardship. This attracts the clientele they desire which is more willing to part with money for higher priced items.
